The University of Illinois Extension is teaming up with area farmers to provide four evening “twilight meetings” to highlight and demonstrate diverse farming enterprises across southern Illinois. Anyone involved or interested in local food production is encouraged and invited to attend. Jerry Jimenez of Darn Hot Peppers in Cobden, IL is excited to be hosting our fourth twilight meeting on Monday, August 10, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Jerry and his wife began growing peppers on their farm, Rancho Bella Vista, about 12 years ago and have developed their love for peppers into a successful business venture. Jerry sets an excellent example of how to maximize profits using a minimal amount of production space.
Over the course of the evening, Jerry will discuss how he got started in the pepper business and how the business has evolved over the years. He will highlight the 21 different specialty pepper varieties produced on the farm and how they are utilized in the different products made by Darn Hot Peppers. He will also demonstrate the processing of products in his certified kitchen. Jerry has done an excellent job of branding his business and products and will be discussing all facets of his business plan, including direct sales, farmers markets, internet sales and his on-farm Pepperfest. Extension Educators, Bronwyn Aly and Nathan Johanning, will be on hand to provide additional information on pepper production practices.

DIRECTIONS: From the North, take US 51 south from Carbondale approximately 15 miles to Vines Rd. Turn right (west) and travel about 0.9 mile; the farm will be on your right. From the South, take US 51 north from Anna approximately 4 miles to Vines Rd. Turn left (west) and travel about 0.9 mile; the farm will be on your right.
