MEDIA AVAIL AT NOON ON THE USI CAMPUS IN EVANSVILLE
The Marion VA Medical Center is collaborating with the University of Southern Indiana to host a Veteran-centered work shop.
“The best thing we can do for our returning Veterans is to welcome them home with an educated and collaborative community of family, friends and professionals,” says Local Recovery Coordinator Nikki Presley.  To continue moving in this direction, the Marion VA and Evansville Health Community Center are collaborating with the University of Southern Indiana to host a Mental Health Summit and Workshop.
“Most military Veterans and their dependents utilize at least some healthcare services outside of the Veterans Administration, so it is critically important that the VA and community providers collaborate,” said Joel Matherly, manager of the Veteran, Military & Family Resource Center at USI. “Our goal is to provide Veteran-centered, recovery-oriented care, especially in the area of mental health.”
The Mental Health Summit will be from 8 a.m. to noon and will include a resource fair for Veterans at the USI location, along with presentations by Veterans on mental health recovery, women’s recovery, and employment and education.  There are still several slots available for community providers who like to attend, particularly in the Carbondale, Illinois area (which will be held at the Carbondale VA Clinic) and Jasper, Indiana.

Given the fact that most Veterans and their dependents utilize at least some healthcare services outside of VA, it is critically important that VA and community providers collaborate to support the mental health needs of Veterans and their families.
