Every year the job market seems to get more competitive.  Employers are looking for people who are willing to work and who will stay on the job.  Employees are looking for job security and opportunities for advancement.

The challenge to get a job and be a productive employee is hard enough for some people.  However, for men and women re-entering the job market after being incarcerated, the challenge is even greater.  Recidivism statistics show that ex-offenders who return to prison usually were not gainfully employed at the time of their new crime or violation of parole.  At the Federal Prison in Marion, Illinois, we are teaching vital skills such as resume writing, successful interviewing, communication, job attitudes, etc.  We are also planning to hold a mock job fair and resource fair for those inmates who are nearing release.

A mock job fair is basically a practice session for the inmate participants.  Volunteer participants, such as you, conduct interviews and critique interview performance, as well as resumes.  Employers are under no obligation to offer any type of employment to any of the inmate participants at any time. In fact, most of the inmates who participate will be releasing in other locations around the country.  A resource fair is for informational purposes.  Agencies or organizations may bring pamphlets or other information for those inmates who may benefit from your business or service.

We would like to take this opportunity to invite your business or organization to participate in the “Gateway to Success," a mock job fair on Thursday, April 30, 2015.  We will start the day in the visiting room at the Federal Prison Camp.  At 11:00 a.m., we will go inside the Federal Correctional Institution (USP) for lunch and will proceed to the Education Department.  We will wrap-up the day around 3:00 p.m.  There is no cost for participating in the mock job fair and lunch will be provided by the institution.

This is a wonderful opportunity for local businesses and agencies to participate in community service and to make a difference in the lives of the inmates who will be participating.  Our goal is to give these men the skills they need to be successful once they are released back to the community, and thereby, reduce the recidivism rate.

If you wish to participate in the interview sessions and/or set up a booth for the resource fair, please contact us by March 31, 2015.  If you have any questions and/or concerns, please feel free to contact one of us.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your consideration and participation in this event.  Hope to see you on April 30, 2015!

Sincerely,
